In Response To: a weird stance on the violence in halo 2 (Raneb) : this article was just run in my local paper sorry if it is old : http://www.newsday.com/news/opinion/ny-vppin234094158dec23,0,4366697.column : enjoy God I hope that guy is wrong. I suppose there is an argument to be made that violent video games help develop a violent or war-like instinct or attitude. Of course, if that is true, it's NOT a good thing. The fact that we're involved in a war right now hardly makes it the case that we want to raise a generation of war-mongering kids. As I've commented before, if I see any redeeming social value in a game like Halo 2, it is in the fact that while it presents violence and war it ALSO presents complication and thinking - much more useful lessons in my opinion. I'll try to keep the discussion from getting political and so won't draw out the implications of this statement, but I think one of the best things about Halo 2 is that it shows two different sides to the conflict (note that I didn't say "both sides," since there are, as in real life, always more than two sides to the conflict). It makes you stop and think, "hey waitaminnut, maybe all the aliens aren't religious zealots intent only on our destruction. Soemthing else could be going on here, too." That kind of making you think is MUCH more useful, in my opinion, than desensitizing kids to the need for war or instilling in them the joy of obliterating their enemies. -Sep7imus |
