It doesn't even really matter. If it weighs more than a tiny fraction of a gram (which it obviously does...while no specifics are given in the books, they give the impression of ultra-dense shells ten or so feet across, which would weigh a ridiculous amount), the energy required to accelerate ANYTHING to .4c in a few thousandths of a second is probably a few dozen orders of magnitude higher than all the energy the human race has ever produced.
