I've read "Ender's Game" and liked it... the later books in the series not so much. As for more Banks books... I'll probably hold off for a while. I didn't see any particularly new in "Consider Phlebas" (new technology, worlds, or aliens- or rather, new things explained in depth) meaning I had to read it just for plot, character, and Halo references. There wasn't much Halo stuff, all the characters die or aren't really developed (Balveda & Yalson survive nearly the whole book but never get developed beyond their respective roles of spy and tough alien lover), and the plot was pretty slow placed, IMHO.

I'm sure a hardcore scifi fan wouldn't mind it (hell, I read the whole thing after all), but I'm trying to "save" those who are reading "Halo-like" fiction with my recommendation. Halo players are probably slightly more militaristic or action orientated... meaning a book like "Ender's Game" (will cool military/combatant tech theme) or "Starship Troopers" would appeal more, in this sense.

For now (because of time constraints), I'll stick to books that can hold their own within 500 pages (I'm sure the Culture books get more interesting as a series, but I'm really not willing to invest my time into several thousand more pages to get it right now)....
