The only relevance for Halo (and the Orbital) are its size and its position, also the conflict between the Culture and the Covenant may be relevant, though nobodddy said you will find Halo's backstory in there. I made a few compareisions at the Core between the book and Halo, you should be able to find them in the archives. The book itself is good, especially if you already kneow about the Cultre and I was suprised about a few turns I have not predicted, also the theme and BHZ's reasons for his deeds are very interesting IMHO.
