In Response To: Consider Phlebas (Xian)

I liked it, but the least of the three of his books I've read. There were some parts that I really didn't like. In fact, about 2/3 of the way through (at the most shockingly horrific and disgusting part, you know the one), it started to dawn on me that I'd read the book before because I realized how I despised what he'd written (which I'm sure was exactly his intent). A lot of it had seemed "strangely familiar" but it wasn't until then that I was sure. (Must have been years and years ago that I read it.)

Overall I enjoyed "The Player of Games" and "Excession" more, and I'd like to read "Use of Weapons" and some others (maybe Feersum Endjinn).

But remember that he is more of an acclaimed serious fiction writer than just a sci-fi hack (half his stuff is not sci-fi, look for the Iain *M* Banks for his sci-fi), and his style may be a bit "mature" for some people to really get into. (I like it though.) But I think "Consider Phlebas" especially is the kind of book that some people might not enjoy if they read it at too young an age.

He certainly paints a fantastic universe, and the spaceships and "drones" are something incredible. (You get a lot more of that in the other books.)

But I dunno why it should be exactly like "halo" (which so far is nothing more than a couple of guys in armored spacesuits and a couple of aliens running around a small area of a ring...) in order to gain something from it.
