I posted something about this over there too, but I will repeat it here. I think walking "the edge of the Abyss" could refer to a trip to the top of the walls on the outer rims of the Halo. The marine probably can withstand vacuum, so why not?
At the outward edge, "down" would lead into empty space. An Abyss, in other words. So if Cortana is inside the cyborg marine while he takes a trip along this area, this might explain this quote. And how else will an AI walk?
I think this message is supposed to have been sent toward the end of or after Halo ends.

Of course, this might also refer to her just barely reaching stable Rampancy. Durandal was a stable Rampant AI, which had never occured before and was thought impossible by many(and was impossible to test because of the computing requirements of a Rampant AI). Cortana might have become Rampant but almost became unstable, which could lead to permanant insanity.(maybe like Traxus IV?)
