Bungie Job (from Marathon's Story Page)
Posted By: Loren Petrich <petrich@netcom.com>Date: 12/7/99 5:10 p.m.

Here is the posting; my commentary of it will be prefaced with "[Me:]"

3D Interior Space Artist

It takes an unusual creative talent to know how an inscrutable alien race would have designed the interior structure of their ancient space relic. It takes an even more unusual talent to know what kind of curtains they would have used. If you think you are unusually creative and talented enough to address this difficult task, we have a job for you. Inscrutable alien references are a plus, but not required.

[Me:] It's clear that Halo will have lots of interior space, a lot more than we have seen so far (a control room and a small hangar). And from this description, it's clear that it is to look *very* weird.

Responsibilities:

Design complete layout of game world structure. Conceptualize, design and create multiple interior spaces built out of smaller primative pieces. UV map and texture map all interior spaces. Create lighting system to effectively convey mood and atmosphere.

[Me:] It seems as if Halo's interiors will be segmented, with these segments being connected by portals; there will also be portals to the outside world. "UV map" refers to texture coordinates -- positions of vertices in a texture-image (skin) file. And this job applicant will have to do a lot of painting...

[Me:] This also means that the Halo engine will have some sort of interior lighting.

Requirements:

Be an excellent artist. Have a strong understanding of architecture and interior spaces. Be able to work with a team. Have experience with 3D Studio Max and PhotoShop. Have two years or more of professional experience. Possess the ability to work well under pressure and deadlines. Must be willing to take art direction well. BFA and a portfolio or demo reel that demonstrates an excellent breadth of artistic skills, ranging from realism to sci-fi.

[Me:] Photoshop seems to be a favorite image editor, but nobody ever calls Adobe the Evil Empire of Image Editing. Indeed, one (onetime) Bungie artist has called it the King of All Apps.

[Me:] I wonder why 3D Studio Max experience was wanted. From some screenshots, 3DSMax is being used to do inhabitant models, such as that alien air scooter, and there may be plenty of such models in the interiors. But might it also be used for the world geometry? This would be similar to what the Oni team is using -- only the Oni team is using AutoCAD for the world geometry.

[Me:] The Trespasser team also did something similar with 3DSMax; they used placeholder models to indicate the inhabitant start points. Will the Oni and Halo teams also be using placeholder models?
