Forever War vs Starship Troopers

In Response To: future shock? (spellbound)

"The Forever War" is to "Starship Troopers" what "Full Metal Jacket" is to "The Green Berets".

Both are great books, but Haldeman writes from the point of view of a Vietnam veteran, where Heinlein reflects a more WWII, "just war" viewpoint. Not a lot of glory in Haldeman's battles, or any larger theme of military service breeding civic responsibility.

The time paradox comes into play when the book's soldiers are sent into battle at relatavistic speeds, experiencing little passage of time while back on Earth a great many years have passed (a great deal could have changed on their target worlds, as well). The interplay between the soldiers and their earth-based leaders becomes more and more strained as the relative difference in time increases (it's like we had frozen a bunch of Civil War era soldiers and thawed them out for WWI, then WWII, then Korea, etc. By the time the Gulf War rolled around the soldiers would be completely lost).

Good reference!

: I believe Joe Haldeman (and maybe others) have called this phenomenon 'future
: shock'.
: Not only caused by FTL travel overtaking sublight travel, but also by
: sublight travel taking a subjectively long time measured at the
: destination. A beefy ship could leave for an occupied planet and by the
: time it arrived (a short time measured by shiptime) technology on that
: planet could be far ahead of what it had been when they left.

: Read 'The Forever War' (and compare it to 'Starship Troopers', by Heinlein).
: Some rivalry there I think :)
