Read the Hyperion Cantos, by Dan Simmons for a better explanation than what i could explain. It was a theory proposed by St. Teilhard that humans are evolving to a ultimate godhead, such as jesus. This godhead requires 3 parts, Human, God, Empathy. I see (you) the cyborg(in marathon) as being the Human aspect, and Duranal being the supreme intelligence(God). I can't figure out who would be the empathy link though.
