In Response To: Steve, what you said appliesto more than the Jjaro (Ernie) : That could be a uphamisim (horrid spelling) Euphemism - correct meaning. : Will we as Marathon fans become bored one day(week?month?),
For many regulars here from times past, that has already happened. If you read the credits terminals in Rubicon, you'll find a comment from Chris to the effect that they lost some of the best members of their team because they "got a life". I think that there is much wisdom in what you say. There certainly are other games, but the biggest competition will be your life and your future. I am an adult (some might argue with that) with a very involving career and a wife who hates Marathon and wants me to spend more time with her. The reason I keep coming back to Marathon is that it serves as a release for the tensions of my life and it is a way to immerse myself in something I enjoy. It is my favorite game because it is much, much more than just a shoot-em-up. Marathon is firmly rooted in plausable science fiction, and it offers endless possibilities. And there is a strong sense of community, here. Will the Marathon universe ultimately close? Currently, the evidence suggests that the real universe is open and will ultimately reach a state of maximum entropy, which is what may well happend to Marathon - it will eventually fade away. But as long as creative minds continue to build on the original Trilogy, many of us will keep coming back. And who knows - maybe Marathon will ultimate be ported to a more modern engine and redesigned to take full advantage, and I'm not talking about M:R, AO or anything current. Just as the best movies are often remade for future generations. Some of the earliest video games have enjoyed a rebirth. Marathon's among the best of the best. Here's my ultimate fantasy: "Computer, initiate holodeck program Marathon 1". As the doors open and before you is a flickering terminal. You draw your magnum, no knowing what awaits you around the corner . . . |
