"Friend of a friend" seems like a hint, to me. Shrug. There are a lot of things in this game that aren't stated other than obliquely. It's a story that famously leaves itself up to interpretation. For example, the whole question of what the dream levels even represent has sparked a few flame wars on this forum in the past month.
IMO, there's no "one true answer" to Marathon Infinity's story. It's like a video game equivalent of a David Lynch movie.
