Well, it's definitely clear that the main character is traveling to alternate realities where other actors have arbitrarily(?) decided to behave differently. Prologue and Rage being two good examples, where Durandal approaches Lh'owon in two very different ways for no reason discernible to us and in ways that the main character probably had zero influence over.
