To clarify a bit here, you get messages when you step over dead humans, step over runes, pick up items, and game messages (like "uh oh"). I think this covers just about everything except for messages about dead monsters, which is what typically floods your messages window with noise.
I could maybe be talked into adding some text that pops up if you happen to currently be standing over a dead monster, if people think that's important. Most of the time you wouldn't be standing over any monsters, so it wouldn't show up.
