Is there a reason you can't do something like:
p.items[item_you're_dropping] = p.items[item_you're_dropping] - 1
items.new(p.x,p.y-reach,p.z,p.polygon,item_you're_dropping)
Aside from how that would place the item inside a wall if you are inadvertently positioned, but having the temple occasionally eat dropped items sounds perfectly PiD to me :-)
