Two things to consider. The engine belongs to what has been called a "2.5D shooter". I think that's just a reference to the idea that the game is not considered to be fully 3 dimensional from the computing standpoint.

In popular thought, the first 3 dimensions have typically referred to spatial dimensions and the 4th dimension is often equated with time. I think Bungie simply designated the overlapping 5D space as such because the other 4 designations were already in use. :)
