When people try to take a poll or survey or census, they don't ask every single person in a population. That's ridiculous. They take a sample group and extrapolate the results over the population. Nobody gives them a hard time, because they know it's ridiculous to expect a poll to be 100% accurate. It's equally fair for me to say that old maps aren't as good as new ones as it is for the people that are so incensed to claim that the old maps are so awesome that we don't have to use new ones. They're opinions. I care about those opinions in as much as they do affect my maps, but I know that at the end of the day, they're opinions, and that's it.

Besides, I think it's fairly safe to say that if there were truly amazing old maps out there, they would have come to light. There's a good chunk of people out there that like to rummage through old maps. But, so far, I have seen only a small handful of good old netmaps (mainly from Coriolis, as I said). There's plenty of passable ones, but I can't look back on my experience and say "wow, that map from '98 was awesome."

And it really isn't for a lack of trying.
