Um... what? How many people play Marathon multiplayer via Aleph One right now? Hundreds? (I sort of doubt it's in the thousands, but I could be wrong.) Back in the day, we saw thousands of downloads PER DAY from the HyperArchive. Do you think all those people were downloading maps they planned to run around in by themselves? Yeah, some of the maps made by fans were solo levels - but the VAST MAJORITY were multiplayer maps. Tens of thousands of small groups around the country (world, sorry) played Marathon multiplayer back in the day. Aleph One wasn't even CREATED until the fan community had shrunk to a tiny fraction of its original size. I can't really comment on the relative quality of old vs new maps, unfortunately - but again, I'd love to play some of the older ones... http://marathon.bungie.org/maphof/ Those were some of the best, back in 96. There were certainly other great maps made later - but I still remember the hours I spent playing some of those.
