I've been playing multiplayer Aleph One for a few years now, and I've seen my share of netmaps from multiple mapping generations.
I would argue that the standards have simply elevated over the last couple years. Let's not make any bones about it -- hardly anyone really played Marathon multiplayer until Aleph One allowed it over the Internet. Since then, I've played many games on old maps, and most of them just aren't very much fun. Some of them still are, but that's a really limited selection.
Besides, how many maps actually have "stood the test of time?" I can think of one netpack -- Coriolis Loop -- and I can guarantee you that there are better map packs out there than that that have been made recently. Maybe I'm biased, but I've not had nearly as much fun on older maps as I have on new ones. And I've played my share of games.
