| In Response To: Oh, okay, then we do disagree. (MrHen)
: Blast... well, in that case, we do disagree. We are really similar, but we
: do disagree. In my model, time is one-dimensional. You can graph its
: change all you want, but unless you plan on changing it all back you
: cannot skip from one timeline to the other.
But the problem with that is that the very notion of change implies something like time; a "hyper-time", some dimension across which things are different. If a timeline "used to be" a certain way... it can't literally have been like that "in the past" (i.e. it can't be the case that, in "the past", a certain future event happened, but "now", in this timeline, that event doesn't happen). So if you're going to say that that there "used to be" a certain sequence of past events, but "now" there is a different sequence of past events, then you need to be speaking of some other dimension across which that change occurs. A cone "changes" diameter between it's tip and it's base (even without actually changing in time) because there is a variation across the dimension of it's central axis. A growing circle likewise changes diameter across a temporal axis. Likewise, if you do something to change the past and come back to the new, altered future and some circle is bigger than it "was" - despite the fact that in this new timeline it never was any other size - the change you are speaking of when you state that fact is a change across some trans-temporal dimension. It's bigger in this timeline than it is in some other, alternate timeline; the same way that you'd say a circle which has grown in a normal temporal sense is bigger in this time than it was in a past time, or a cone is bigger in this place than it is in that place.
Of course, to someone who is only moving across this trans-temporal dimension via conventional (forward and backward) time travel, and not via some sort of lateral timeline-jumping machine, previously visited timelines are in that traveller's subjective "past" (i.e. he would remember them the same way we remember things in the past of our standard linear conception of time), and for that reason they would be as inaccessible as things in the (linear) past are to those of us without time travel. So I don't think we disagree at all on the subjective experience a time traveller would have; I'm just saying it can't make any sense to speak of changing timelines without acknowledging in what way a timeline "used to be" some other way than it is now, since you couldn't mean that literally.
