Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is probably one of the best example of this. Lord of the Rings is a great book but it is rather hard to understand all of the implications of the events in the book. Tolkien wrote endless stories about that world and we only catch a snippet in Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit, and the Silmarillion.
Dune is another good example. Frank Herbert had plenty of material that was never published and his son has been publishing books based on a lot of that material. The detail in Dune is amazing, and there is no way you could understand the entire universe of Dune from one book.
That does not mean it does not have a coherent answer.

What we do not know is how consistent and how large this backstory is. Since we only have three games to go on, there are significant gaps in what we can deduce.
This is not all bad, it just means things have to be taken with some salt.

Lord : of the Rings is a great book but it is rather hard to understand all of : the implications of the events in the book. Frank Herbert had plenty of material that was : never published and his son has been publishing books based on a lot of : that material. The detail in Dune is amazing, and there is no way you : could understand the entire universe of Dune from one book. : That does not mean it does not have a coherent answer. : They do have one for the Halo universe, right? I vaguely remember them : posting scans of them when news of the Halo movie was still news. : Yep. Which is why many of us are still here. : What we do not know is how consistent and how large this backstory is. Since : we only have three games to go on, there are significant gaps in what we : can deduce. : This is not all bad, it just means things have to be taken with some salt.
