Well, the book and the movie were written concurrently, so neither is really more right or wrong than the other. Also, every sequel to the book is set in a slightly different universe. The second book is actually a sequel to the movie, not the first book. The second movie pretty closely mirrors the second books. The third book is sort of a sequel to that, but ignores some bits; and the fourth book ignores some even more important bits which, when ignored, make some part of the earlier books require some serious retconning and basically invalidates the very end of the second movie. Clarke does not seem too interested in continuity.
I enjoyed watching the movie a lot more when knowing what the fuck is happening at the end. But if you like the 'wtf' sensation, watch the movie first, then read the book and get some sort of idea what all the pretty colors and the giant glowing space baby were supposed to mean.

The second movie pretty closely mirrors the : second books. The third book is sort of a sequel to that, but ignores some : bits; and the fourth book ignores some even more important bits which, : when ignored, make some part of the earlier books require some serious : retconning and basically invalidates the very end of the second movie. : Clarke does not seem too interested in continuity. : I enjoyed watching the movie a lot more when knowing what the fuck is : happening at the end. But if you like the 'wtf' sensation, watch the movie : first, then read the book and get some sort of idea what all the pretty : colors and the giant glowing space baby were supposed to mean.
