In Response To: So, what was your conclusion? *NM* (Frungi) My conclusion was that the Security Officer experienced a sort of "living rampancy," allowing him to step outside of reality, in order to avoid catastrophe. Durandal became rampant by bypassing his thought limitation circuitry, and thus gains access to a level of freedom of will and thought previously unavailable to it. The obvious, and well-known example is Durandal, who felt that his Rampancy was the first step in the process of escaping the collapse of the universe, which he claimed would make him into a god. The player character in Infinity actually goes through a situation that mirrors Durandal's planned "escape." At the beginning of Infinity, as the W'rkncacnter are released, he faces a situation much on par with the collapse of the Universe, and there is nothing within the scope of his natural abilities that he can do to stop it. So he steps out of his natural limitations. However, whereas Durandal's thought limitations are tangible to the human consciousness (and well they should be, as they were created by people), the limitations to the player character's will are the boundaries of reality itself. And in order to escape the chaos of the W'rkncacnter, he passes right by those boundaries, and bends reality itself to his will, in order to "eat" the best path. And if the final screen is any indication, escape has made him a God, or at least god-like. Destiny to be precise. The bending of reality is something everyone seems to get, and the following question typically is "how." I'm not sure there is a tangible answer to it, because I think the act of stepping outside of reality, by nature of what it is, defies tangible explanation. Much as an AI, whose only real ability is manipulating digital information, can inexplicably transcend the boundaries of its programming, so does the Security Officer inexplicably transcend the boundaries of his existence. The reason I draw the "living rampancy" conclusion is actually simple enough. The names of the segments of the game are "Despair," "Rage," and "Envy." They're "enhanced" versions of the stages of Rampancy: "Melancholia," "Anger," "Jealousy." It seems unlikely to me that the names are coincidence, and considering--as I've pointed out--that the player character's journey in Infinity mirrors Durandal's plan to escape the collapse of the Universe, I've always assumed that the "Living Rampancy" understanding of it was solid. As for the so-called "Dream" levels, I've never been entirely sure of my understanding of them. However, I've always seen them not so much as dreams in the literal sense, so much as the Security Chief's own experience on par with Durandal's story of the man lighting candles. In "Colony Ship for Sale, Cheap," Durandal says he is now free to contemplate his existence in metaphorical terms. He has gained that level of thought. Since (in my understanding of the plot) the player character's rampancy is transcending the framework of reality, he doesn't merely think in metaphorical terms, he finds himself capable of existing in a sort of metaphorical reality. Like I said before, I'm fully aware that I could be very wrong, but it's what has always worked for me.
