I remember H&K once developed an assault rifle that used ammuntion without shells. As far as I remember it could actually shoot under water because it DIDN'T throw out any shells - just like the SMG. This type of ammunition is refered to as flechettes - metal darts with an exlosive load glued to the end of it. In that case it wouldn't need a shell opening.
The rifle didn't make it into any army's arsenal.
What I don't remember right now is, if you can see thrown out shells when using the SMG in Marathon.
