I agree that the Pfhor as seen in Marathon are too slow and stupid to be an interesting enemy against Halo vehicles. But I recently arrived at the conclusion that Wayne Pygram of Farscape would sound awesome reading most of Durandal's terminals (as Scorpius for some, Harvey for others). Has anyone else ever imagined that?

Doom III didn't have a problem with it. Alternatively, if it's a console game where text would be too hard to read, then the terminals could be voice messages, like in System Shock.
In my book, the only real requirement is that players who slow down and carefully explore the level are rewarded with bits of story; all of which are well-crafted and intriguing in their own right, but never simply give away any of the central mysteries of the game. Promoting literacy is nice, but not essential to a game's being Marathon-like.
The Halo novels sort of played that role, but they were still frustratingly plain and direct in revealing things (most of the time).
