I'd accept this if Bungie hadn't made it clear that certain out-of-game features (the novels, the Art of Halo book, etc) are 'canon' - drawn from the same Halo Bible that contains the entire story arc as the games themselves. They're not 'inspired by Halo', they were created specifically to flesh out the Halo universe, and contain valid information about peripheral events.
