Is it not pausible that if Bungie had ever intended to go back to the Marathon universe they wouldn't have done something like Doom 3?

As has been argued in this thread earlier, and said by Bungie itself, Halo is not a sequel to Marathon. I believe that Bungie, if still interested in Marathon, would have gone down the remake road. Like Doom 3 they could have re-fashioned the entire Marathon world. I don't think that they would have made a sequel and not openly said so. The Marathon symbol and other hints towards Marathon in Halo are probably just a kind of remembrance for past Bungie history.

It would be pretty cool though if they remade Marathon like they did Doom.
