This is why I phrased my response elsewhere in this thread as "set in the Marathon universe after the Marathon series - in other words, a sequel". The version of the Halo story related to me was set at a far future point in the Marathon universe. It would require no more back-story explanation than Halo itself did: there's this conglomerate of aliens out there. They think we're their devil and they're dead set on destroying us. Now for such-and-such reasons we wind up on this ancient ring construct and... so on.

It's not a sequel in the sense that M2 is a sequel to M1, but then, Infinity's not really a sequel in that sense either. It's a sequel more like "Speaker for the Dead" is to "Ender's Game" - set many ages later, with no characters in common except the main character, and the universe around him mostly changed but with all the major players (races) still around in some form or another.

That said: take that last paragraph and put it in the past tense. It's not true anymore; only 'in spirit' as someone else said.
