Ah, I was starting to wonder if I had seen the bottom of the staff before. Maybe my ambiguous feelings simply spring from the juxtaposition between the bottom of the staff and its blobby top. (Which I'm sure is based on the smaller sprites, of course, and my reactions are entirely personal...)
