Hmm, that seems to be a vestige from the Evil staff this was based in part on.

See the image below - the top left is a frame from the original Eternal Pfhorstaff by Ken Hodgeman. (Not his best work, as you can tell). The top right and bottom right are the two frames from EVIL. The middle three were composited and edited together from Ken's and Randall's staves and then improved upon by Simon DuPuis, with some later editing by me.

As you can see, the crook is there in the EVIL staff too. Did nobody ever notice this before?
