I haven't read the book, but I did see an adaptation of it on The Discovery Channel/PBS/A&E or whatever, and it was really interesting. IIRC, the amount of energy it would take to record the location of every atom in the body and transport/recreate it at another location would be phenomenal, something like all the electrical energy used by humanity to date.

I also liked the part about what the effects of instant acceleration to warp speed would have on the crew...I do remember one of the scientists referring to "astronaut salsa". They also scoffed at inertial dampeners. The nerve.
