As far as the odd tanks here, I always figured they were spare parts.
Perhaps from regular soldier that couldn't be saved?
Good way ta recycle, anyway.

As far as linkages to the Marathon mythos... Can't be much more than pretty damn vaguely.

Probably about as much as Trojan M1 was.
