In Response To: Re: Who is your favorite map maker? (deathmonger) : forgot: could someone point out some of the really good scenarios for me to
Having just recently replayed through Red on the lowest difficulty, I have to say that much of its reputation comes from its insane difficulty. Don't get me wrong - there are aspects of Red that are incredibly cool and the sprite design is on a par with anything out there, but map design leaves a lot wanting and monster placement is a big, big problem. What I'm saying is, don't let Red get to you - it's not worth it - even the great Dr. John Sumner refused to vid it. Now, as for can't miss Marathon experiences, you definitely wantto play Rubicon, Evil and Trojan as you already mentioned, but you should also definitely play Tempus Irae and TI 2. For all their flaws, thery're still among the best. A personal favorite is Pfh'Joueur, which is one of the most visually stunning scenarios ever done. I guess you've found Battle Cat's D-Day, which has some great gameplay and a cool stunt - being forced to repeat the first level if you fail your mission. Mark Levin's Vengeance is also a must play - still the only level to let you pilot a juggernaut. I really like Ben Potter's Marathon Fell, which has a very nice, nonlinear plot line and some great levels - although there are numerous small bugs, it doesn't significantly affect gameplay. The Black Series has some awsome maps, but a really crappy story - still a must-play. Excaliber, Morgana's Revenge (EMR) takes place outside of the Marathon Universe, but it's none the less a great scenario with a Camelot theme, but with levels ranging from prehistoric times to the distant future. Marathon Dissent is also outside the Marathon Universe, but a pretty good play and worthwhile. Except for Trojan, all of these are based on Infinity, There some M1 scenarios that are notable as well, even though they precede Forge and Anvil, making them all the more remarkable. Trojan is absolutely the best of these and probably the only one that is ever compared to the later scenarios. Operation Tantilus remains the most highly nonlinear scenario to date - perhaps a bit to much so, as you can repeat some levels over and over - but it is well worth the download. Marathon Revisited - how old did you say your are? - is also very good, although it has some pornography. There are also numerous short scnearios and single levels that are well worth mentioning, among them Escape!, Escape! 2, Devil in a Blue Dress, Foreign Legion and Kondoura for M2, and 1984, an AI Called Wanda, the Chai'etra Saga, Gemini Station, SoNK (also for M2) and Origin of the Species for Infinity. Operation Wormwood for M2 is supposed to be good, but it crashes on me in the second level. There are also a bunch of Earth-based short scenarios that many people like, but that I find too contrived. Finally, don't forget Goran's Yota Saga for AO - it's contrived story is based on an organized crime theme, but the mapmaking is truly original. Well, that should keep you busy for a few years. |
