In Response To: Re: my big rubicon confession (goran) : He might be an arrogant bastard, but it doesn't change the quality in his
I don't disagree with you at all, Goran, but I do take issue with someone who deliberately trashes a scenario for personal reasons. There is a must read thread on this in the forum to which you contributed heavily. Most of the points raised were valid, including your very astute comment that most people who hated Rubicon were mapmakers. We could argue all day whether mapmakers are better or worse at judging the quality of other people's scenarios, as knowing how it's done cuts both ways, but the point of the matter is why FM trashed Rubicon - was it because he really hated it, or because he had other motives. Although I have no reason to doubt him, it must be kept in mind that Scott Brown may have been biased when he posted this response to the aforementioned thread. If there is any truth at all to what Scott said, however, it paits a picture of FM being a very self-serving, vengeful individual. This doesn't mean that he didn't have reason to complain about elements of Rubicon, but I can think of no example of poor flow in Rubicon that doesn't have an equally bad or worse counterpart in Evil. Indeed, Evil is filled with entire areas of its maps that serve absolutely no purpose other than as places for the player to explore and waste ammo. Taken in context and in light of his prior arrogance, I have to conclude that FM's motives were anything but pure. Now, FM wasn't alone in trashing Rubicon. Clearly there are areas where level design could be better, as is the case in just about every other scenario ever created including the original Marathon Trilogy. So what about judging a map by the person who created it? By comparison, it's not easy for me to listen to a Wagner symphony without thinking about the fact that the composer was an ardent supporter of Hitler. FM is no Hitler, but he's not someone I would want to know, either. Have I once been unfair in my review of Evil? Are not my posts full of praise for his work? Yes, there is constructive criticism, too, as there is in my posts for the Rubicon Volunteers series. I admire FM's work even as I dislike the person behind it. |
