In Response To: Re: A note on wasps (VikingBoyBilly)

: Ahem.

:

: What do you think that head is, a hollow cockpit? Those things bleed yellow
: in M1, you know.

I actually did think it was a cockpit, but the pilot was a large enough specimen to have his blood fall out of the machine when it crashes. It could also be like the synths in Half Life 2, that would also help explain the mini ones in Infinity.

: Anyway, I find it absurd to declare it canon that they are insects when we
: are talking about extraterrestrial species that have no common ancestry
: with even the oldest, single-cellular life forms on Earth. Unless the
: spore theory gives you that tiny sliver of hope that, maybe, the same
: species of meteor-riding germs in the cosmic exchange got to land on both
: Earth and Pfhor-prime when the meteor split into two pieces and went on
: their own journeys of several millions or billions of years to each
: planet. Hmm, maybe pfhor prime was just a little bit closer at the
: meteor-split-point, explaining why the pfhor have advanced thousands of
: years ahead of humanity.

They probably just share similar traits to bugs and that so literally being bugs, reptiles and birds wouldn't really work. Genetics is a funny old thing, especially when you (I) didn't pick biology for standard grade or Int 2. :p

: Still, the chance of them coincidentally sharing birds, insects, and reptiles
: is infinitesimal, as orders of species like chordates and arthropods only
: exist together despite being VASTLY unrelated because the development of
: each of those physiologies goes extremely far back near the beginning of
: the evolution of life on earth when life forms were much simpler, and
: those forms happened to be good at surviving in Earth's environment and
: ecosystem (there's this weird mushroom-eyed creature that went extinct at
: that time that could have given us a bunch of new odd-looking species. If
: only it survived, then we can point and laugh at how funny its descendants
: look).

I only just read this after typing the above and yeah, we both thought of a good point. Sounds far fetched for Earthlings, but the pool of creatures on Pfhor prime might be different in terms of diversity and genetic paths favoured than it is here on Earth.

: We have NO IDEA what kind of environment or ecosystem the pfhor homeworld
: has! It could be a place completely unsuitable to insects or birds in its
: primeval times. The pfhor might have also evolved differently when they
: became a spacefaring species, given what Leela says about them being
: adapted to low-grav environments. Oh, and this is all completely
: overlooking that THESE THINGS HAVE A SECOND BRAIN IN THEIR HEAD-STEM!!!

Rubicon does have swampy forests in Pfhor Prime, which are quite well suited to insects, reptiles and birds as originally theorised, but that's coming from a non-canon source.

I wonder if the control glands were part of a genetic engineering experiment we never had explained. Maybe they grow it after the larvae morph into infant fighters like how the S'pht machinery is grafted on after the biological part is born? (if I'm remembering that right)

: (and, by the way, part of the classification of
: insect is having six legs )

I think the term "insect" and "bug" in Pfhor cases are used as a generalisation as they look like it to us, but actually have traits of other invertebrates and species too. Those silk textures in Infinity's Pfhor ship levels come to mind, though that could have just been to resemble the Alien movies.
