There are difference between M1A1 and the original Marathon. I don't know if these have been documented anywhere. Others may know.
If you want to play the original Marathon game then you will need to use SheepShaver. It is possible to emulate Mac OS 7.5.X (the OS that was around when you first played the game) and thus experience the 1994/95 look and feel. I don't know if anyone has ever got the original level music to play. Apparently the latest version of QuickTime that is compatible with SheepShaver is version 4.1.2. So the version of Quicktime Musical Instruments you get with this is going to mess with the sound.
If you really want a job and I mean a real job... see if you can set it all up using the link below. As they say in Marathon... poenas dare.
