Rather than change the design what they do nowadays is cause the player to die from the fall. Halo is a good example of this. The player dies if you fall/jump off an area of a map that you are not suppose to or can't get out of.

Of course, the Marathon marine is made of tougher stuff. As Durandal says: 'Because only you would survive the fall...'

One solution would have been to put lava at the bottom of the bridge room. At least that way you wouldn't of had to take your own life. ;)
