I'm not saying that anyone honestly believes that you have some sort of power over them; but that your tone of writing is such that it conveys a sort of emotional sense of superiority, as though you thought that you had power over them, which will tend to evoke in a reader a "oh yeah? well just who do you think YOU are to make pronouncements from on high?" sort of response.
I'm also not saying that you think you have such power over anyone. Just that the way you write sometimes gives the impression, on a very subtle subconscious level, that you think you do. Which evokes a non-rational, emotional response in some people to make them feel like you're some smug conceited arrogant bastard who thinks he's all the hot shit.
Consider if someone came into a conversation about politics and said (for an extreme example), "Look, God exists, and he personally speaks to President Bush, and so that means that Bush's decisions must be right!". That's clearly opinion, not something that can be easily (if at all) demonstrated as some sort of fact. Someone who is emotionally detached from the conversation will just automatically, subconsciously append "in my opinion" and "Bush says that" and "if thats' the case, then" and such into there, to get the accurate, neutral statement of someone's opinion out of it. But someone who's not so calm and rational about everything (which most of the people calling you conceited probably aren't, at least not all the time) will hear that and go "What? No he doesn't! What are you nuts? And who are you to come in here telling us what is and isn't so?"
I'm not defending such reactions at all; as I've already said, they're emotional, irrational responses. But I think I can see what it is about your writing that stimulate that response in some people, and I'm just pointing those things out to you in case you care to try to avoid that. If you don't care to tiptoe around people's feelings, that's your decision. I'm just trying to give my honest impression of the situation, in case you wanted such feedback, which I imagine you did since you bothered posting about it.
