Yeah, I do something like that - weekly CD backup of things that get updated a lot (text/image documents, for example), monthly DVD backup of bigger stuff (video, database etc). Got a second external HD I double save important stuff to. Haven't had to use it yet, but nice to know it's there.
Seems to work out pretty good so far, pretty cheap too, considering how much it'd suck to lose everything. (been burned... 3 times now. No, 4. >.< )
