No idea what to do about making the PB work again, but at least it wasn't your HD that died. If the PB is dead, you can still recover your data if you plug the HD into another computer (or an external enclosure). A repair shop would probably be willing to do that for you if you don't have a comp or enclosure that can take that kind of drive, or the ability to get it out of the PowerBook in the first place.
My main documents drive almost died last week, on which lives my life's work, including amongst other things Eternal X. I hadn't been keeping backups. I had time to run out and buy an external FW drive and back up before the thing died, thankfully.
