Marathon Infinity really doesn't make much sense unless you're already familiar with the first two games, especially the second; and even then, it's still hard to follow because it involves time travel, which introduced multilinear causality which is really hard for most people to follow.
Basically:
In Marathon 1 you defend the colony ship Marathon and free Durandal and some S'pht, who at the end take you across the galaxy to the S'pht's conquered homeworld Lh'owon.
In Marathon 2, you search Lh'owon for the clues left behind by a lost clan of S'pht, which you eventually find, calling them back to defeat the Pfhor. But at the end, the Pfhor destroy Lh'owon's sun, unleasing an alien "demon" of S'pht mythology and dooming the universe.
In Marathon Infinity, you are sent back in time over and over to relive alternate possible ways the events of Marathon 2 could have gone, each one invariably ending in the release of the "W'rkncacnter" demon, until you find and follow one possible chain of events where it is contained, and thus, you win.
