That's actually an ironic story. The first person in my family to play Marathon was my daughter. She got a free copy of M2 in the mail after ordering a printer ribbon (this was around '98 or so). She hated the game...LOL (my apologies on her behalf to Bungie). She then passed the game on to my son. He liked the game for awhile, but never really got into it. He then passed in on to me. This may come as a shock to most players who know me, but my initial reaction to the game was somewhere in between my daughter and my son.....that is, my attitude was "yeah, ok that's nice....now back to....". After that, I don't exactly remember how things transpired, but at some point I started playing M2 for real. And the rest of course is history. As for my wife, well she has no time for such mindlessness. :) (Or so she would say.)
