I agree, if you think about it, insects do a lot given their size and computing capability per individual; an ant is insignificant, a colony can be intimidating. Colonial insects are many things, like ants, for instance: soldiers, engineers, builders, wreckers, farmers. Just think if ants had only a decent fraction of a humanity's ability to utilize tools and think analytically. We'd be screwed.

Well, even T'fear has a third eye, so I don't think it's necessarily a caste characteristic.

The masks the fighters seem to wear could have filters, but they also quite obviously have dual feeds coming from their back-packs, so it's possible the masks serve a double-function. The opposite may be possible, maybe they can breate our air but need an added ingredient; one that's harmless to us as our exposure to their air doesn't seem harmful or to deplete our oxygen.

Hell, maybe their masks are simple humidifiers. The cool, dry air of a human starship could play hell on the delicate tissues of feeble fighters.
