I love talking about the Pfhor.
As regards to their intelligence, I'm inclined to think that the upper castes are just as or more intelligent than humans. However the stifling nature of Pfhor civilization discourages innovation. A while ago I described my theory on how a slave-based society would be slow to develop in many areas. Though the Pfhor did steal much of their technology from the Jjaro, I'm inclined to believe they developed the rudiments of space travel on their own. It actually would make sense for a race with an expansionist mentality to eventually develop space travel. I prefer to think of the Pfhor as being more than mindless bugs.
As for the third eye: it probably does serve some useful purpose for them. Are they in sockets though? The terminal artwork of Pfhor skulls show sockets, but in the actual game they look bulbous, at least for the Fighters. Maybe a caste thing?
Finally, another question. Do Pfhor breath air? At first it would seem like they do, since non vacuum-enabled Fighters are running around on the Marathon. However, if they don't breath air, they could still survive in an oxygen rich environment with a breathing filter, (which the Marine would also have). I don't think breathing filters require an oxygen supply. I don't think there's any evidence for this in the game, I just thought I'd toss it out.
