I once speculated that it was a huge gravity wave (or graviton wave). Basically it could rip things apart with a rapid occillation of the forces of gravity. Nothing but microscopic organisms (or things somehow able to handle or shield from the forces) could survive. Since most science-fiction has gravity also affecting slipspace, even ships and objects in slipspace would be affected, maybe even more so. A space faring race could be utterly destroyed: building, people and ships crushed and ripped apart.

I like your DNA killing idea too, BTW.
