Well, you see, the Halo is home to a population of magical carnivore gnomes. You never see them, because they're shy and wily. But voracious! When a body is left on the ground, they wait until your back is turned, and then they partake of a gory feast!
Sometimes, they are so tempted by the veritable smorgasboard of flesh that they will consume a body right before your eyes. But fear not, they are grateful for your offerings, and will not harm you (though, they have been known to consume living characters where the player cannot see them). Once all of the bodies have been devoured, they happily march on their way, whistling joyful tunes in frequencies that humans cannot hear.
Related to these happy little gnomes are the weapon gnomes. But theirs is a story for another day!
