What?
If true, this really undercuts a lot of my confidence in Bungie's ability to come up with compelling characters.
I just thought whoever wrote/gave final approval on H3's script dropped the ball badly, and Truth was originally meant to be the conniving political manipulator who didn't Believe.
I mean, the marker name [heck, the inverted-marker names for all three], the description of them as "floating space popes", H2's version of Truth *being* an unbelieving cynic... It hangs together perfectly.
Until you get to H3, of course, when he becomes a rambly, deluded practitioner of a dying faith. I was really looking forward to see what actually made Truth tick, and why he was misleading the Covenant. When I realized the deception was just delusion, I was pretty annoyed/depressed. Made the character much less interesting, and really shattered where they seemed to be going in H2.
I've said before that H3 was about the smoothest gameplay experience I've ever had, but I did find the story fairly lacking, compared to a lot of Bungie's past works (Marathon, Myth, Halo 1, Oni)...
Can you source both those quotes? I'm not sure where I might dig up the Staten cutscene commentaries, but I'd definitely be interested in seeing that bit. As for the other quote, anyone have any idea what it might be a reference to?
