I think you totally missed Matt's point.
If each individual player is the ultimate arbiter of taste, then the Least Common Denominator IS the definer of where a game's story should go. Which is EXACTLY WHAT GRAVEMIND SAID SHOULD NOT HAPPEN.
Publishers will push for what makes the most money. Gamers, as a group, will buy what's fun - but as a group, their idea of 'fun' tends to be more lowbrow than, say, someone like you. It's up to a game developer to navigate between 'appeals to the masses' and 'is intellectually fulfilling' - and in this particular case, you (and Gravemind, and probably a bunch of other people) feel they didn't do as good a job as they could have. 10,000,000 sales suggest that your opinion is NOT the majority, however. It's up to you, with your game dollars the next time out, to decide whether they were so far off the mark as to not be deserving of another chance.
Me? I had a few problems with Halo 3. Way fewer problems than I had with Halo 2. And even Halo 2, in my opinion the weakest of the three games so far, was MILES above other stuff on the market at the time. Could Bungie improve? Of course. Do they NEED to improve to get my money next time? Nope. Their track record, for me, is good enough at this point that I'd buy the next game even if they told me "this one's worse than the last one."
(They won't tell me that, because it's not.)
I think what Matt was trying to point out (and forgive me if I get it wrong, Matt) was that this conversation has gone from "this is what I didn't like about Halo 3" to "gaming companies are sellouts and have no artistic integrity" - and that's a silly place for it to go.
