I love what Bungie did with Halo and Halo 2. I became a fan of the studio via those games and I don't have the the history with them (Marathon, etc) that a lot of people here do.
I'm a massive fan of Halo for it's story and it's gameplay, and the latter has never failed me. But I thought Halo 3 was weak narratively, and I thought a lot of the ideas brought up in the previous two games didn't pay off as well as I'd like.
It's totally my own opinion, but as much as I love Bungie for creating this universe I've always enjoyed it more when other people play around in it. I even liked Ensemble's view of it. So when I see people outside of Bungie contributing ideas and plots that I personally enjoy more than the core trilogy I've got to ask myself how much of my love for the universe is really Bungie's doing.
Microsoft continue to bring back people like Eric Nylund and entice people like Greg Bear to add to the mythos... I can't see fault in that.
That said what I've seen of ODST is incredible, and the storyline looks like it's going to be amazing. I'm a total spoiler whore, so I know how it ends and it really is my favourite conclusion to any game in the series. Still if the recent news stories about ODST starting out life as the Peter Jackson project are to be believed I'm still not confident in saying how much Bungie really brought to it story wise.
I hope these opinions don't upset anyone.
