In Response To: Re: Rewind feature (Black Guard) : How about in-game (as in within the Halo 3 videogame) video editing? If these : replays aren't standard video files and possibly won't be easily exported : to PC, then maybe a video editor will be a feature. HIH tricksters could : edit their feats into tricking montages, and MLG players could, well... : make montages, without exporting the video files to pc via video capture : and dealing with messy frame rates, video conversion etc., then they could : trade uncompressed videos via Xbox Live that are as high res. as the TV : they are viewed on. I imagine that the save game feature will be implemented by recording high level information about the world. It wont be recording frame by frame. There could be some kind of export feature to make a video from a saved game. Anyone could then watch the video on a pc or mac. The problem with being able to rewind and continue is that it has to be obvious that it happened or there has to be a way to switch off rewinds when recording a speed run. There has to be some way to tell that a run was genuine. Maybe the saved game feature could have a no-monkey-business setting that turns off rewinds and skulls, etc. Or it could log the rewinds and skulls used. Then there would be some feature in the game that can check a saved game and shows if it is kosher or not. But forgetting spped run concerns for now, I think that a rewind feature would mean that you wouldn't need to explicitly save to get the advantages of micro-saves. Gameplay wouldn't be interrupted by pauseing to save and immersion would be preserved right up till the momment of death. Then, in the second or two during the death animation, you could press start and pick rewind or revert to checkpoint. If you think that the standard checkpoint is too far back then just rewind to the nearest safe part and continue from there. Its better than micro saves because you don't have to try to guess when you might need a micro-save. You'd always have the option to go back when things go wrong. And you could pick exactly were to go back to. In addition, maybe any paused 'frame' could be converted to a full save point for future tricking. Its just that you could make the decision to save after the fact when you know its a good point as opposed to having to guess in advance.
