I disagree with calling Gravemind's appearance appearance and intervention to actually be a dues ex machina. Dues ex machina is pulled out all of a sudden to resolve an otherwise intractable situation, but are either the Arbiter or the Chief's scenes really intractable? Its not too hard to imagine, say, the Covenant fleet is a few minutes away and the Chief gets to escape and fight elsewhere, nor is it difficult to imagine that Tartarus could decide he wants to betray the Arbiter somewhere away from Gravemind's chasm. But both scenes happen to be contrived to direct both characters to plunging into chasms where a certain Flood-being is waiting to direct the plot in another direction. In fact, I would dare argue that the lame plot device in this case isn't Gravemind, but the crafted "deaths" of the two heroes that placed them firmly into Gravy's hands. |
